Coates by Stow • St Edith

The glory of St Edith’s is its medieval woodwork. Magnificent rood screen with its loft and oak boarded tympanum dominates the church. It is the only surviving example in Lincolnshire. Please come and see our wonderful church mice.

The Church is an architectural gem, an oasis of peace and serenity located in the midst of a busy, working farm.

It is a living place of worship with regular services.

Almost every century has made a distinctive contribution to the structure, a testimony to the many people whose spiritual home it has been. Amazingly it escaped the ravages of the Reformation and rebellion, aided, no doubt by the moated situation.

Stow Minster • St Mary

Stow Minster, Ashley Taylor, Push Creativity*

The internationally renowned cruciform Anglo-Saxon Minster church of St Mary dates to 975AD, with a Norman chancel completed c1150AD.

Important features include Viking graffiti from 10th/11th century and a Viking grave marker.

This year our theme explores the role of Vikings within our area of West Lindsey, their local encampments, trading and farming activities, and their relationship with the church.

Enjoy the peace and quiet.

Predominantly 14th/15th century, the building has fine examples of other architectural styles over a period of 900 years, including a late 10th/early 11th century grave cover fragment and a small Norman doorway.

Other things to discover include 14th century tomb chest supporting alabaster knight & lady figures, a fine Victorian William Hill organ, imposing 1935 Ninian Comper stained glass window and the pre-reformation ‘Saxilby (music) fragment’.

With Saxon origins, the church was rebuilt as a traditional Norman church with a narrow nave and chancel with west tower. A north aisle was added during the Early English period when the Bishop of Lincoln gave it to the Gilbertine Priory of St Katherine without Lincoln. The influence of this connection can be seen in the quality of the aisle arcade capitals, two of which can be matched to a mason working on Lincoln Cathedral.

Brattleby • St Cuthbert

Photo: Ashley Taylor, Push Creativity*

St Cuthbert’s sits in peaceful and secluded wooded grounds on the southern edge of the village. The lower section of the tower dates to the 11th century. The bells are some of the oldest in the county, installed in 1450.

The churchyard contains the base of a listed Saxon cross, pre-dating the church and the thought provoking grave of WWII pilot Clare Connor (full story in church). the Saxon inner arch and the 14th century chancel arches show evidence of wall paintings.

Visitors are assured of a warm welcome, with drinks and light refreshments being served, donations accepted.

A church has stood on this site for 1000 years.  The current church has been the subject of four documented restorations, 1450, 1778, 1858 and finally in 2013 at a cost of £130,000 funded by English Heritage.
